When you're writing a piece, photos, audio and sometimes even video can further explain your writings that words cannot describe. When using photo's in a story, they capture the image of a person and how they feel right when you snap that quick photo. It expresses emotions and it implies your work with emotion and the reader can feel what you writing, rather than read it.
With Audio, it is widely used with interviews or capturing the sound of the area you are reporting. Weather or not you are a national reporter for CNN, reporting from the Middle East or in Israel. In your writings, you'd want to incorporate the ambiance sound of the pandemonium or the general feel through sound.
With video, you would want to capture the visual aspect rather than the words of reporting or journalism. Video is just moving pictures combined with audio.
When not to use either of these would be from mainly a political stand point. Maybe with a Presidential election, you'd use audio to capture a speech. But very rarely that would be used.
