It's quite obvious the needs the Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for. The Steelers need to get younger on defence and are in desprate need for cornerbacks.
With Bryce McCain signing with Miami, and Ike Taylor being let go, it leaves a gaping hole in the Steelers secondary. The Steelers haven't taken a cornerback in more than ten years first overall and hopeully this year will be different. The Steelers also have been looking to fill in for a pass-rusher, but have a lot of raw talent in former first round draft choice Jarvis Jones and former Buffalo Bill from a couple of seasons ago Arthur Moats.
With Troy Polamalu retiring it also leaves lingering questions… can Shamarko Thomas fill the role of the future hall of famer? Thomas didn't play much since being drafted, only seeing time on Special Teams and still has a lot to prove. The Steelers resigned veteran, Will Allen with the news of Polamalu hanging up the cleats and Allen filled in for Polamalu when he went down with an injury. The final question is… will they fill this need early in the draft? Or wait for later picks? Only time will tell come April 30th when the draft takes place.
Tight-end is also an issue that the Steelers have looked at given Heath Millers age and his health. Miller has a lot of miles put on himsel, but has been successful when healthy and a key target for Ben Roethlisberger. Finding a player like Miller who can recieve and block is hard to come by. If they do decide to draft a tight-end in the top 3 choices, they need to be careful.
Some notable players to look for are:
Waynes ran a 4.31 in the combine making him a more speedy corner and has good length. Excels in Man Coverage and can play on an island making him a good fit for the Steelers. He has great recovery speed making him a good fit for the defensive scheem. He carries though, one problem. He was penalized nine times last season making him questionable on dscipline.
Johnson could be the more probable pick for the Steelers in the draft. Johnson doesn't have elite speed, but has a tremendous verticle leap. A very decisive in zone cover and has a very good understansing of the game and position. Lacks in run support and can be fooled by recievers and his speed could be a factor in downhill battles. Overall a solid pick for Pittsburgh and will bring talent to their defensive as well as youth.
If by some miracle one of the top pass rushers falls to No.22 the Steelers will grab him. at 6'4 he is a one of a kind athlete. He is a solid pass rusher and will be a key piece in the defense right away. Has a slight problem with ball instincts but makes up for it with pure skill and ateticism.
Overall this draft is filled with Diamonds and hopefully they can find the missing piece(s) in the draft.
